Dr. Chi Zhihe joins the group as a postdoctoral researcher

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Chi Zhihe, who joined the group as a postdoctoral researcher in September 2026. Zhihe brings a strong background in chemistry and materials science.

Zhihe earned a PhD in Chemistry from the National University of Singapore and a bachelor’s degree in Polymer Materials and Engineering from Sun Yat-sen University, and trained under Professors Xiaogang Liu and Zhen Li. Zhihe’s doctoral research focused on polymer-based room-temperature phosphorescent materials, spanning molecular design, materials fabrication and the regulation of luminescent properties.

In the group, Zhihe plans to combine this chemical and materials expertise with AI to study structure–property relationships and guide materials design, with an initial focus on organic luminescent and functional materials.

Hongyuan Zhou joins the group as a master's student

We are pleased to welcome Hongyuan Zhou, who joined the group in September 2026 as a member of the 2026 master’s cohort. Hongyuan brings together a biotechnology background, laboratory experience and an interest in reliable AI for scientific research.

Hongyuan studied Biotechnology through the Strong Foundation Program at South China University of Technology, with a minor in Economics. His experience spans protein expression and purification, computational protein analysis, causal inference and AI agent development.

As a student leader of the silver-medal-winning SCUT-China team at iGEM 2025, he coordinated computational and experimental work on protein production. His other projects have examined protein language-model predictions against known biological constraints and developed AI research workflows that connect claims to source evidence.

In the group, Hongyuan is interested in connecting biological experiments with model evaluation, asking when AI predictions are sufficiently supported to guide the next scientific decision.

Celebrating Our 2026 Graduates

On June 10, 2026, our group gathered to celebrate the graduation of our students and mark this important milestone together. Congratulations to Yujian Liu and Yinghao Liu on receiving their master’s degrees, and to Yutong Wang and Qingquan Wang on receiving their bachelor’s degrees. We wish all of our graduates every success and happiness as they embark on the next chapter of their journeys.

As part of the graduation ceremony, Prof. Xu joined students from the next cohort in performing the song Chapter (篇章) for the graduates. The performance conveyed heartfelt wishes, enthusiasm, and anticipation for the graduates as they set out on new journeys.

Interdisciplinary Gathering with the Wang and Lin Research Groups

On May 29, 2026, our group joined the research group of Prof. Yinghang Wang from the School of Law at South China Normal University and the research group of Prof. Zhenghao Lin from the School of Architecture at South China University of Technology for an interdisciplinary gathering.

The event began with lunch, during which students from the three groups introduced themselves and shared their academic backgrounds and research interests. The conversations brought together perspectives from biomedical science and engineering, law, and architecture, creating opportunities for meaningful exchange across different disciplines.

After lunch, the groups watched the film Dear You together. The gathering was made possible by the longstanding friendship among Prof. Xu, Prof. Wang, and Prof. Lin, and was intended to encourage students to broaden their perspectives, learn about research beyond their own fields, and build connections across disciplines.
